Speech, Language, and Communication Therapy.
Speech, Language, and Communication Therapy.
I have extensive experience providing speech and language therapy and community support in the context of early intervention and early childhood special education. I am motivated and eager to begin with clients at any point in their progress toward improved speech or language quality and function, as well as their communication skill set in their daily living activities.
Families choose me because my philosophy is to treat the whole child. In most cases, that means family participation. Changes in speech, behavior and language do not happen through just speech and language therapy. In my experience, a holistic approach considering environmental factors, family involvement and community bridging, will foster optimum results. This looks different for each client because each client has a unique set of skills and challenges. I find immeasurable joy in working with families, caregivers, teachers and other community partners.
I am nationally licensed through the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association as well as certified by the Oregon Board of Speech Language Pathology. I have no financial ties to any organizations or software.

Speech Language Pathology covers a wide variety of communication disorders and challenges. I believe that all children have the right to be heard and understood and that looks different for every person. My hope is to empower families and children to make speech therapy part of their daily life in order to create meaningful change for the whole family. For an articulation client, that might mean you learn to practice with your family during certain routines at home. For a child learning to use language for the first time, this might mean each family member takes a turn modeling words or sign language each day. For a student who stutters, they might practice making up stories to tell the family pet. No matter what you might need support with, I tend to take a holistic approach. I provide services for people not just their disorders.
My family highly recommends Early Childhood Speech Language Pathologist Karla Gill. She has worked for two years with our daughter, who was diagnosed with an articulation disorder at the age of three. Over that time our daughter’s speech proficiency has greatly improved. Our daughter is now much better understood by her peers, teachers, and grandparents. Many have noted the improvement. Our daughter feels more confident -- she will speak up more around her peers and she will keep trying if at first she isn’t understood.
Our daughter is an introvert and somewhat shy. Ms. Gill has a gentle, caring and enthusiastic way of connecting with children. She consciously seeks out activities that will readily allow our daughter to express herself. Our daughter has come to trust and listen closely to Ms. Gill and looks forward to the visits. Gently guided, our daughter has become better at recognizing her own mistakes and correcting them.
Ms. Gill is a strong communicator and keeps us well appraised of our daughter’s progress through emails, written notes, assessments, and conversation. Ms. Gill is always prompt and responsive when we have concerns or questions. She knows her subject, and has readily explained why and how some erroneous substitutions of sounds and letters occur. As parents we better understand our daughter’s articulation patterns and substitutions. She shares and trades insights with us about what is successful. Her energy and optimism is contagious.

Karla is hands down the best SLP I have ever worked with. Our School was fortunate enough to have Karla working in our classrooms for many years. The whole class would love when Teacher Karla would come to the classroom. She makes her time with the children engaging and inclusive. She really understands children and how to adapt to their specific learning styles. Karla cares for the whole child! She helps parents and teachers understand that language covers many other areas of a child’s growth and development, not just speech. We look forward to working with her in the future.

We feel so fortunate to have met Karla early on in my twins' speech therapy. She started working with them through early intervention when they were 2.5 years old and in preschool. Karla made learning fun with age-appropriate materials that meant they didn't even realize they were being tested and working; to them, it was literally all fun and games. We missed Karla during kindergarten, but for 1st grade, chose to hire her privately and have not regretted it for one second. My kids were stumbling with online speech therapy during distance learning, and it was clear they were regressing. Within one Karla session, they were back on track and actually *asking* to do their speech "homework" at night when brushing their teeth. Those who talk to them regularly have made comments that their speech has really progressed this fall. My kids have gained confidence in their speech which has translated to confidence in all aspects of their life. It has been magical to watch.
